To maintain your hair extensions and keep them in tip top condition, here are some basic maintenance steps to follow.

Regular checks

  • Most importantly, remember to attend scheduled maintenance checks for professional assessment.

Washing your hair

  • Don’t shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours after your extensions have been applied, this allows the bonds to set.
  • Shampoo and condition your hair at least once a week. It is important to keep your hair and scalp clean because your hair is likely to tangle when sweat and dirt accumulate.
  • Wash your hair gently in a downward motion (from the roots to the ends). Rubbing can cause the hair to tangle.
  • You should apply a conditioner to your hair after every wash because the extensions do not receive the natural oils from your scalp. However, do not apply conditioner in the root area or near the attachments as that may loosen the bonds.
  • Use Great Lengths aftercare products as these have been specifically designed to prolong the life and appearance of your hair extensions.
  • Avoid hair products that contain alcohol because alcohol makes hair dry.

Drying your hair

  • Always dry your hair thoroughly, don’t leave it to dry naturally. Hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, so start drying at the bond and work downwards, on a low heat.
  • Do not towel dry your hair with a scrubbing motion. Instead, use a blotting motion and wrap your hair in a towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Always blow dry your hair on a cool/warm temperature.
  • When allowing your hair to “air dry,” Great Lengths recommends that the attachment sites be dried with a blow dryer to prevent the bonds from remaining wet for an extended period of time.

Brushing

  • Great Lengths flat headed, soft bristle brushes are the most suitable for brushing your hair.
  • Whilst holding the bonds, gently brush your hair in small sections, being careful to brush any tangles out from the bottom first.
  • Do not comb between the scalp and the bond. On a regular basis, separate the bonds with your fingers to prevent matting.
  • Some extension loss is normal throughout the life of your Great Lengths application. The average person experiences natural hair loss of 100 to 150 hairs a day. A full-head Great Lengths application covers approximately one-third of the head. After some time you can expect to see a small quantity of your hair that has shed naturally yet is still attached to the bond. This is normal and should not be interpreted as hair that has been pulled out of the scalp by the extensions. Daily brushing as instructed above will void those loose hairs from tangling or matting at the attachment site.

Styling and finishing

  • Styling products should only be applied to the lengths and ends of your hair and not the bond itself.
  • The Great Lengths round brush can be used for blow drying.
  • Styling options for Great Lengths are virtually limitless. However, there are a few precautions you will want to take. Blow-drying and use of curling irons, flat irons and hot rollers may be used but heat must be kept at an adequate distance for 1.5 inches from the attachment site (bond).

Sleeping

  • We recommend you tie your hair in a loose pony tail to prevent tangling while sleeping.
  • Do ensure that your hair is completely dry when you go to sleep. It is not advisable to sleep on wet hair.

Exercise and your lifestyle

  • Hair extensions suit most lifestyles, however, please be mindful of the following activities, which may affect the lifespan of your bonds, or in fact, cause them to breakdown:
  • Regular swimming, particularly in sea water and chlorinated water. You should wear a swim cap if possible. After swimming it is best to shampoo and condition your hair immediately.
  • Regular sauna or steam room use.
  • Excessive aerobic activity.

After these activities use diluted Great Lengths Anti Tap Water solution to restore your hair and scalp to its natural pH balance.
